Some random thoughts

A little over a week has passed since I arrived and I wanted to put some things down on paper that will probably not make for a good full post on their own.

1. All the drivers in Israel are insane. They do drive in the middle of the road most of the time. They are angry and loud and in a hurry.
2. It doesn't seem like a lot of people here act happy. If you ask them, they will most likely say that they are, but they just don't show. I haven't seen the relaxed atmosphere of American Midwest yet. === Editor's Note - After I wrote this blog, ynetnews had a news article where according to recent survey, over 80% of Israelis are satisfied with their lives ===
3. I'm definitely not used to most of the Russians here. They are different than in the States. Will probably expand on this more in the future. In the meantime, just gathering the info.
4. It's very nice to hear from people that they enjoy reading these posts. Makes me want to keep writing. It's also heartwarming to get good wishes from everyone. Thank you.
5. After a week I still don't have a cell phone. Feel like an incomplete person. Who knew...
6. Expanding on the previous thought, I'm beginning to realize that I should only rely on myself. If I don't do something, nobody will do it for me. At the same time, if there is nothing that I can do, I should completely put my trust into others. I know it sounds confusing, but I've been stressing out over not having documents like ID card, or having to go to welfare office or motor vehicle department (to register my license). There is absolutely nothing I could do to change those because I can't leave the kibbutz during the week anyway. However, I found out today from a previous ulpanist that everything will be organized and done in time. So why lose hair over something that's out of one's control then? I should just focus on things I can change. Like studying.
I will get a cell phone though. Hopefully next week.
7. There finally was a glimpse of what I was looking for. This will be even tougher to explain than the whole "relying only on yourself and others" thought you just read. It's the feeling of home. I was riding with David somewhere and while driving by some random houses on some random street in some random town, I felt that I love them. That they are mine. It was a brief moment but when I felt it, I struggled not to cry. Now I can honestly say that already I am happy that I came here. I will repeat that for myself: I am happy. So with that knowledge, just imagine what's to come...

  • do you need to repeat those words to have the feeling of hapiness or do you need to repeat those words to insure yourself and all of your readers without this feeling and in hope it'll come?

  • Mark - I used to work with you mother at Natural Golf and your mother would often tell me (proudly) about you. My daughter just spent a year in Israel studying and my son will probably spend next year in Israel. I hope you find evryothing you are loking for and most of all that it becomes a "home" for you (emotionally, if not physically). Good luck.

  • hahah the insane drivers!!! i had a CRAZY bus adventure in israel....me and asya decided to take the #2 bus from the kotel back to har nof (where we were staying, in neve yerushalayim) and we didnt know it was an ultra-orthodox bus...we sat in the front, which turned out to be the mens section and the back was the womens. we had been on the bus for 40 min and were no where close to home...so we were askin everyone for help and ppl refused to talk to us, we tried english, russian, and french...the men were all hiding their faces and eyes from us, trying not to look at us, it was pretty funny (even tho we were dressed appropriatlely)...the bus driver refused to talk to us! he was so pissed, he kept yelling and swearin in hebrew..we asked him for help, he spat on the ground! then theres this HUGE FIRE in the middle of the st...and the bus is driving right into it!! asya and i start freaking out...in america, the bus would just take a different route, but in israel, the bus is going straight into the fire!!! it was soooo scary...and the bus driver thought it was funny that we were so scared...he was soo crazy he just drove right into that fire..we were lucky we didnt get burned alive, he pretty much missed the fire by 5 cm....CRAZZZY bus drivers!!!!! and the bus ride took 1.5 hrs to get to har nof finally....and no one still helped us at all

how are the russians differnt in israel???
